5 Ways Learning a Language Will Help You

Learning a language is an idea that comes to anyone’s mind at least once in their lives. Most people think about learning a language at the end of the year as part of their new year's resolutions. And we believe that’s an amazing idea.

There are a lot of benefits to learning a language, most of which are not visible to people but here are 5 reasons why you would love learning languages:

1. It’s a challenge:

Learning a language isn’t hard, but it needs dedication and motivation. To all the people who love to take on new challenges and try different things, learning a language can be just the perfect option.

If you love to challenge yourself, your knowledge, and your dedication, then learning a language can certainly satisfy all those desires.

Nothing would feel as satisfying as trying to learn something new and feeling the progress when you read something in another language and understand it.

2. More career opportunities:

As of today, the world changes every second. The world isn’t the same as it was two days ago, let alone years ago. The different nations of the world are now colliding together and we get to see how other cultures and countries live their lives.

Learning a language can open new doors, career-wise. You could learn French for example and then look for universities or job openings in French speaking countries. Most job applications would want someone who already speaks a specific language, and that person could be you.

Competition in the job market can be difficult, we are constantly trying to stand out and show that we are different. Being bilingual – speaking two languages – or trilingual – speaking three languages – can help you shine among hundreds or even thousands of applicants.

Also, there has been a study that shows speaking a second language or being bilingual might increase your salary by up to 35%.

Learning a language can also mean more opportunities in your country! When an employer sees you speak more than your native tongue, it shows you are more dedicated and open to learning new things, which are essential soft skills in any job in any field.

3. Discovering new cultures:

Learning a language is more than just vocabulary and grammar lessons, when we learn a new language, we get to understand how other nations think, how they see the world, and how they talk about it, as every language has its ways of expression. By learning a new language, we get to fully immerse in their language and their culture leading to discovering new perspectives on life.

As Federico Fellini said it "A different language is a different vision of life."

Learning a new language with Mango Gate is much more than words and grammar tips, we provide full immersion in the language, concerning culture, identity, and communication skills. We take you from just memorizing the words, to using them in their culture proper way.

4. Increases your cognitive abilities:

To be able to learn a language, we add new words to our brains, linking them with already existing words and pictures. We also understand different sentence structures and grammar rules leading us to think in a different way than we are used to. All of these activities are considered a “workout” to your brain.

Thinking in two languages at once, keeping words apart, and continuously switching between them can lead to better judgment, better multi-tasking abilities, and better conflict management according to a study by the title of The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual.

A fact that was scientifically proven is the higher density of grey matter in the multilingual brain than in monolingual brains. The grey matter is where most of your neurons and synapses exist. And when speaking in two different languages there’s more activity in certain regions of your brain, all of this constant workout can help delay diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Check out this Ted-ed animated video that explains this in more depth.

 5. Personal Development:

To start a language from zero, we get to learn a new way of thinking step by step, starting from the very start. We often feel intimidated by multilingual because we think about how they know so much more than us, but we forget that they started just like us, with simple words and by practice they were able to become fully proficient in theses languages.

The process of learning something from scratch can get us out of our comfort zone, and make us fear that we are pronouncing things wrong or that we have a weird accent. Being in a healthy learning environment can help us overcome those fears. The environment in Mango Gate’s classes is very interactive and the teacher is there just to help you every step of the way.
